The Leukemia & Lymphoma Program at Riley Children’s Health is dedicated to the comprehensive care of children, adolescents, and young adults with newly diagnosed and relapsed leukemias and lymphomas. Our program has a five-year survival rate of over 90%.
Our multidisciplinary team approach with pediatric oncologists, nurse navigators, social workers, and a complete psychological support team provides treatment not just to the patient but also to provide supportive care to the whole family. Our team of experts is highly skilled in treating children with leukemias and lymphomas.
About 40% of childhood cancer cases involve leukemia and lymphomas. Leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells. When a child has leukemia, their bone marrow produces many abnormal white blood cells.
Since white blood cells help our body normally fight off infections, children with leukemia cannot fight these infections. This leads to poor immune function and may increase your child's risk of infection.
White blood cells also interfere with your child’s production of red blood cells and platelets, which can cause anemia and bleeding problems.
Lymphoma is type of cancer that starts in the lymphatic tissues. These tissues can include:
- Lymph nodes
- Thymus
- Spleen
- Tonsils or adenoids
- Bone marrow
Lymphoma is the third most common type of cancer in children.
Our Leukemia and Lymphoma Program is one of the largest programs of its kind in the Midwest. Each year, we care for more than 200 newly diagnosed patients. Our team uses a variety of treatment options, including:
- Blood and marrow transplant (BMT)
- Hematopoietic stem cell transplant
- Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T therapy
- Phase I and II clinical trials for patients whose cancer has relapsed or is not responding to treatment
Riley is home to Indiana’s only Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant Program, offering pediatric stem cell transplant, CAR T-cell therapy and immune effector cell therapy for children. Riley is also one of a select group of centers in the nation to offer CAR T-cell therapy for relapsed leukemia, as well as ongoing research to develop new CAR T-cell technology.
